Flex refunds applied to the Flex transaction aren't subtracted from category spending

Related to Flex refunds on separate line?

Issue:

When you receive a partial or full refund from a purchase made on Flex, the refund will either be deposited in your bank account or applied directly to the original Flex purchase. In both cases, you can set the category for the Flex purchase and in the case the refund is deposited into the current account, you can set the category of the deposit. Assuming the category is the same in both line items:

  • In the case the deposit is added to your current account, the spend and refund transaction rightfully cancel each other out
  • However, in the case where it’s automatically paid towards the original Flex purchase, the spending category assumes the original amount has been spent, which makes spend and budget tracking unreliable, confusing and incorrect

For example:

Given that I hadn’t spent anything else in the Shopping category, I were to spend £5 on Flex and assign the transaction category to Shopping, and assuming a full £5 refund:

  • When the refund goes to my current account, I can also set the refund category to Shopping, and the amount spent in that category goes to £0, which is correct - I haven’t spent anything in that category
  • When the refund goes directly to the Flex transaction, the original £5 is still counted towards the category amount

Details to reproduce:

In both cases, it’s easier to see when adding the transactions to a category you don’t have any other transactions in.

In the case where the refund is deposited to your current account:

  1. Make a payment on Flex
  2. Refund the purchase
  3. The refund is deposited to the current account
  4. Set the refund transaction to the same category as the original Flex payment
  5. See that the transactions cancel each other out in the category’s spending insights

In the case where the refund is deposited to your current account:

  1. Make a payment on Flex
  2. Refund the purchase
  3. The refund is applied directly to the Flex purchase
  4. See the original transaction amount count towards the category’s spending insights
