I was never a member of that either though I was a big fan of the books.
Strangely, after I went freelance I ended up with “Julian” as my agent for a while (or at least, someone who’d played him on TV as a boy).

Don’t Barclays charge is you need to replace your your debit card more then once?
They have threatened so for years but I’ve never been charged. When you order a replacement it does state “free” so there’s probably the capability to charge if need be.
If a card becomes faulty or wears out then why should anyone be charged? Furthermore the expiry dates have extended over the years to possibly 5 years in some cases.
Monzo doesn’t charge for if the card breaks on its own, but for general wear and tear, I think they would charge the £5 fee.
People get around this by saying it’s been lost/stolen though
Very nice - is the green of the card as dark as it looks in the middle picture? The green card I’ve seen is much paler (more of a mint green), so I wonder whether the colour has drifted over time.
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Is that some sort of texturing on the eagle?
It’s not as bad as the premier one seems to be, but I can’t say I’m rushing to lose my old card.
Even by the standards of some modern bank cards, this redesign from Barclays seems pretty pathetically low effort. I’d have thought that banks would be keen on having a good design for their cards, since it’s essentially free advertising for them. But evidentally not.
And of course, thus passes the last major bank to issue embossed cards. Personally, I think it’s a shame - the embossed numbers really help give cards a sense of physicality, of being a functional object, as well as breaking up the space.
Always tricky to get accurate colour reproduction I think, but I’d say so. The original colour was supposed to mimic the colour of the US dollar.
The later ones with the Amex rebrand (new typeface and slightly redesigned centurion) without the white border were much paler.
Then there was the “Millennium” redesign which @Not posted - can’t remember if that was ever issued or whether it was just a concept.
The millennium redesign looks terrible
You can still get one from Co-op
First direct credit cards
Agreed. No idea what they were thinking with that. Even the main “American Express” text is in a random typeface that isn’t either the old style with rather wide outlined letters or the unified new brand itentity created to work across physical and digital media.
When they first released the new design I wasn’t sure I liked it, but it’s definitely grown on me and I think it looks more elegant. The quality of the cards has definitely improved too, when I received that first card in 1990 I was amazed how cheap it looked. If you zoom in on the artwork such as the “WORLD SERVICE” text of the card background is very crude compared to the more modern green card.
I really want to like these old Amex designs but I just can’t. They are so ugly.
I’ll bite. Why would opening a McDonalds franchise in the UK require “dealing with the Americans”? They have a UK HQ and a UK team handing all business matters.
Or was this hyperbole masquerading as a joke? If so, I misunderstood. As you were.
I hadn’t considered that but you’re right, I think they did make the cards feel more substantial. I don’t mind them disappearing in a practical sense (much easier to read as printed numbers provided that typeface, font size and contrast are OK) but they did give a card more “heft” in the third dimension when holding it.
It’s interesting to compare newer non-embossed cards - metal/plastic hybrid Amex feels nice because of the extra weight. My monzo cards I have no complaints about. My HSBC credit card however feels like a cardboard day ticket for the Tube that you’d throw away without a thought.
Saw this on reddit. Apparently it went in a washing machine. Reckon it would still work contactless? (Was also in r/starlingbankuk)
My cards in Samsung Wallet
I think in many ways, I do prefer the UI of Samsung Wallet to Google Wallet but it just isn’t supported as widely. I can’t add my Barclaycard or my Bank of Scotland debit, and it is so much easier being able to add cards and tickets by just taping the “add to Google Wallet” button.
Looks like a crap version of apple pay. I’d rather have GWallet than that.
Apple Pay still has the best app though imo!
Does anyone have the monzo burnt coral and the standard HSBC card side by side in wallet?
Can’t work out in my head if the burnt coral goes well with the HSBC logo well.
From what I gather, the rest of the app is quite different. You can’t really tell what it’s like just from that one screenshot
Theres one way to find out
Get Max
Edit: mastercardnevervisa has both I think
