Collected thoughts on card design (Part 1)

I’ve seen the 3rd one of TV (I think they stand outside it quite a lot when talking about Scottish news on the BBC). I’ve been to the Falkirk Wheel and apart from it being a bit cloudy, it is a good photo.

Well now I want a trip to Scotland to check out all of these landmarks and see how well they hold up in person!

It is right across the water from the BBC Scotland building at Pacific Quay, plus they use it for a lot of the political party conferences, so that figures

Santander debit card replacement arrived

  • Visa → MasterCard
  • Massive logo in the background is gone
  • Santander font is nicer, bolder, modern - kind of like the Ubuntu font
  • Background is mostly pastel deep red, with square pattern to the right corner
  • MasterCard discs without words
  • Still embossed with silvery type ups
  • Consistent white font on the card (old visa had different fonts in black and white)
  • White core

Overall much cleaner design. I think it looks like their credit cards on the web. So maybe not new to them. But new to me as a debit card customer.

It is definitely better than their old design. They’ve really mastered the simple but effective design.

Does you MasterCard logo not contain the words “MasterCard” then? My new Santander card from April has "MasterCard under the circles so if yours doesn’t, they’ve already updated it slightly.

I like these designs a lot. I think the ‘upside down’ orientation is great.

I’m not sure how I feel about them. They seem a bit too empty in my opinion and I don’t like how the logo is on the left side like that.

Turn the flame into the Monzo M :monzopride:, tweak the colours a bit and it’ll be a hit (with me).

Following on from this, does anyone think Monzo needs a new debit card design? Personally, I think their current design is very good (and unlike the Santander ones above, doesn’t look empty. I think portrait cards look empty easier than landscape cards). Maybe they can offer another card colour for those that don’t want such a bright card.

There’s a long thread here on Monzo card redesigns - and there are a whole bunch of other threads if you search, too!

Thank you!

I do like the first two designs that I quickly glanced at (probably more than their current hot coral design).

Definitely think Halifax’s debit card is the one most in need of an update.

It looks really outdated and the logo no longer matches the rest of their brand.

They’ve recently updated the Clarity Credit Card. Maybe the debit cards will follow.

I also hate the grey bit on the right side. It just looks ugly.

Halifax, where contactless is a noteworthy feature!

I could make some harsh joke about the Stone Age and the Flintstones, but I won’t.

What do you think is wrong with those two?

I actually quite like that design and I’m not even bothered about the logo being repeated in the corner and with the big version (mostly because they do look different).

It appears to be a liquid version of the ‘open world’ Barclaycard brand mark. As the name suggests it’s meant to be an open globe both to signify the global reach and usage as well as being open and welcoming, and the ‘weird dragon’ is meant to give a hint, although not actually be obviously recognisable, to the Barclays eagle.
