A little 
button on the transaction notes and tags page would be handy, or automatically selecting all text when you open the page, so you don’t have to manually select all the text to clear it every time.
In truth, how often do you find this field prepopulated?
About half the time, as every transfer transaction has the sender’s reference of course, and then also PayPal transactions have random references.
