Christmas/New Year 2024

Now that 2024 is coming to a close, and holidays are starting for some (not me!). How’s everyone spending Christmas & New Year?

What are your plans for the festive black hole between the two?

I’ll be spending Christmas at home with Milo, working up to & including Christmas Eve, I just need time to myself to decompress and I can’t think of anything more stressful than having to spend time with people after work so late in the year!

Work from home, catch up on stuff that I kept being sidetracked from by endless meetings. Drink baileys, not see a single human being. I need to recharge my social batteries and Christmas with family is always my worst nightmare.

Working most days, but I’ll just be relaxing in between, and then my grandparents are coming over on like the 29th I think . It’s just going to be a chill time.

Games and films with family and friends. It’s the only aspect of the season I like and I really need that this year more than ever.

Christmas is otherwise just a normal day for me. I don’t enjoy the Christmas holiday.

Cherish your time with Milo! It’s the best way to spend this time of the year IMO.

I’m in Finland until New Year’s Day. So for me it will be the first Christmas away from home with my girlfriend’s family. Then in between Xmas and NY we are going to Tallinn for the weekend to see one of my best friends.

Otherwise will be walking, snowball fights, reading mainly I suspect!

I’m not a fan of Christmas as I lost my Dad at this time of year

It’ll be a quiet Christmas with the family and then out to our local Bistro for New Years Eve tasting menu

I’m just holding out for the new year.

Christmas isn’t the one.

Christmas Eve - one side of the family
Christmas Day - the other side
Boxing Day - hosting both sides

27th. Absolutely. Fuck. All.

New Year, no idea yet. Don’t get the obsession.

Christmas Eve - My parents coming ours
Christmas Day - Going my parents
Boxing Day - Going to my wife’s family

Same as every year, only thing that changes is we alternate Christmas Eve/Day. New years don’t care, will be asleep before midnight anyway.

I’m just having a quiet one at home with my partner and our cat.

I’ve not got any children and my parents have both passed, so not much by way of family to make the effort for either.

Also decided not to bother with a tree this year. You only have to take it down again so why bother putting it up…

The sooner it’s over, the better.

Xmas Eve long dog walk with friends to the country pub. Drinks ensue

Xmas Day with family & in-laws. Drinks ensue

Boxing Day afternoon/evening with friends at a large house party. More drinks ensue

Day after Boxing Day. Nothing. Plenty of gaming. More drinks involved

Day after that (‘Boxmas’) - Direct & indirect family plus friends around to ours for a house party. Drinks again

Day after that - check into hospital for suspected alcohol poisoning

New Years Eve - no plans - probably in a village pub

New Years Day, recovery, gaming, films. Drinks again.

Back to work on the 6th

2 Weeks of no routine and plenty of drinks.

Also plan on migrating my Home Assistant from the Rpi5 to the Home Pro, repurposing the Rpi5 as a better Plex server, decompiling the car’s motor management module to see if I can mod the code for more power. The usual stuff.

We have a small 3ft one on the sideboard this year, used to have a 7ft massive thing but we couldn’t be bothered this year.

Honestly this is actually a really good idea. I only mildly assisted with putting up the tree this year, as imo I don’t really see the benefit of a tree. Same with Christmas dinner. Really don’t see why I can’t just have a normal meal.

It is a normal meal in our house, it’s basically what we have for a Sunday Roast.

One of my best Christmas dinners was when we were together as a family and everyone except me went down with Norovirus. I wasn’t going to cook any of the usual stuff for myself so had some fish fingers and chips from my mother’s freezer. Hadn’t had them since childhood so it brought back some nice memories.

Spent the rest of the day continually cleaning the toilet and bathroom.

There we are - nice Christmas story for you.

Oh that’s brilliant. (not the CC, but just the words used :joy: )

They may have been the fish fingers from your childhood. Did you check the sell-by?

I recently moved home and this place has a freezer so first thing I bought was fish fingers, and had a fish finger butty for tea.

The following night steak chips and some peas (prefer the frozen garden peas). Was a delight.

Simplicity is key.
