Changing a lot of my categories, it’s effects on historical transactions?

Hi, I started using custom categories after paying for Monzo Premium some years back.

I didn’t think much of it so started organising just by adding a suitable category to the thing itself, eg:
-coffee out
-martial arts class
-gym membership
-car insurance
-car repairs

And so on.

Over the years now I have hit my limit of 50 and didn’t know there was 50 as the limit.

After waiting a year and no unlimited or more categories.

Since we are in the new tax year.

I will change my categories now because having specific ones like I have becomes fairly useless when you cannot add more to the list as you need them. I don’t even use this feature anymore but I would like to.

So I will ‘nice up’ to more general categories now like ‘all car expenses’ and so on

I just have a question tho. If I change ‘groceries’ and ‘eating out’ to a new ‘all good’ category, how does it affect earlier categories? Does all historical categories eg ‘eating out’ in 2022, they will also be changed to ‘all food’?

Mainly asking as I end up with the odd business expenses sometimes on my personal account and would be good to know before I do this how this works.

For example maybe previous categories remain as they are even if I deleted all the categories and only moving forwards do the new created categories apply. Etc.

Also if anyone has the best or easiest method for doing what I am doing, please give tips.

Thanks

50 categories? Wtf

50 categories is a LOT, and micromanaging your expenses down to this level of detail just seems extremely excessive to me.

However, to answer your question, editing an existing custom category will update the category for all transactions associated with it (so in your example, all “eating out” will update to “all food”).
I know that deleting a category will keep all transactions with associated with the deleted cateogry, but I couldn’t tell you if you have access to that category in trends after deletion, or if deleted categories will count towards your 50 limit.
