Board games

This is a thread to discuss, share, and recommend your favourite board games. Apparently we don’t have one of those.

An offshoot from my chess set thread inspired by this reply:

Christmas is approaching, and for me the one element of it that I actually look forward to (when it happens) are the games, especially the late night board ones. I always try to find a new one to play each year on Christmas night.

This year I’ve bought the one @j06 posted about in the chess thread: Veiled Fate

To start the discourse I’ll also share a few of my own favourites (besides the classics like Monopoly and Cluedo).

Disney Villainous is probably my own personal favourite, with the concept similarities being why I bought Veiled Fate. You play as a Disney Villain and your goal is achieve your villain objective before the other villains whilst simultaneously working to stop them from achieving theirs. I own several of the expansions at this point too (which can also be played on their own without the base board game). There’s also Marvel and Star Wars spin off variants if you’re more into those. I suspect they play the same or similarly but I’ve never tried them.

Last year’s Christmas board game I got was Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legends. Sea of Thieves is one of my all time favourite video games, and is responsible for some of my very best gaming memories. So a board game adaptation that stays very faithful to the gameplay from the video game was an instant appeal for me. It’s not perfect though. It takes quite a while to set up a game, and the rules are not so much complex as they are ambiguous. But the gameplay sure is a ton of fun and is just as fulfilling of the pirate fantasy as the video game.

So, Monzo Community, what are your favourite board games? What’s your most recent board game purchase? What do you recommend folks play?

I don’t think I’ve ever played a board game.

Should be an interesting topic.

I have been wanting to play Secret Hitler since it was on Kickstarter but these days I don’t have a big enough group that would play board games :frowning:

That one sounds like fun! It’s my kind of board game but it sucks you need a minimum of 5 to play it. If board games can’t scale down to two, or at least 3 people, they lose a lot of their appeal for me.

That’s exactly my issue, not enough people.

I have a question for you - where in the UK are you? :eyes:

I’m not saying we should get an Unofficial Monzo Meetup in the new year, but I’d definitely say I’d be up for some boardgames if there’s somewhere central :stuck_out_tongue:

I played Catan for the first time the other week - a simple game, but so much fun! Really enjoyed it. Can fully understand why it has such a following, I need to get a couple of expansions for it, so that more people can play!

South Wales so 3-4 hours from you I believe!

But 1.5-2 hours to a central place! :stuck_out_tongue:

Catan is actually a goated game. I need to convince my Mum and Dad to play with me at some point.

Another board game that I rather enjoy is Monopoly. I know some people don’t get along with it, but I find it really fun.

My brother also recently got us a game called Dorf Romantik. It’s a board game based on a video game I believe. It has fairly good progression and you unlock more stuff as you continue to play.

It involves the use of goats?

I was just going to make this comment. I last played it when it was known as Settlers of Catan but I don’t believe goats were necessary to play it.

I get GOAT. But :goat:ed? Greatest of all time-ed? What’s that supposed to mean?

Sheep actually. :sheep:

It’s a sheeped game.

I enjoy Pandemic a lot, even if it’s now a little on the nose given 2020. But it was created in 2008!

Played this a lot with friends, it’s so good. Really enjoy playing it as a regular game now we know how to play etc.

If anyone was looking for a central place to meet I can def recommend Chance & Counters. Food was amazing too.

Plus in Birmingham next door is retro gaming.
