Well, of course pretty much by definition it’s a small proportion, but that doesn’t mean it’s nothing. And you still have to decide between different banks - certainly I’d need a compelling reason to leave my money with barclays for £650/yr rather than the Lloyds equivalent for free (and I’m sure other banks have similar tiers - HSBC’s shared dealing is also very cheap).
It isn’t, it’s expensive. Plenty of fixed fee platforms that are free or essentially so at that level. Lloyds is free (£40/yr at lower levels), HSBC is £40, etc etc. IBKR is dirt cheap, and so on. Any % fee platform scales very poorly unless there is a low cap on fees.
Yep - that’s where I hold mine.
Well that’s my Barclays account now open
Got my membership number but have to wait for all the other stuff before I can login to the online banking.
Depends on what you’re looking for. If it’s DIY investment then, yes, there are cheaper platforms. However, if you’re looking for wealth management then it’s definitely cheap.
Right, but that isn’t the asset management fee, it’s just the amount it would cost you to qualify for that service tier. The asset management itself (rather than the bank account which is “free”) will surely have its own hefty charges.
Has Monzo support got noticeably better recently or is mine a fluke?
Not only did they fix the Barclaycard connected account issue not showing transactions (it works again since a few days ago), but a support agent took the initiative to message me a week or two after I had reported the issue, out of the blue, to tell me they applied a workaround that solves it until Barclaycard fix it on their end (very unexpectedly detailed answer), and to ask me if it now works for me. I’m impressed!
I think something did improve, I had my account frozen, escalated to a specialist and unfrozen within the space of about 2-3 minutes on a Saturday night recently, the other time this happened it took a few hours (also on a Saturday) - both times triggered by monzome payments
Definitely a little reassuring
Just upgraded to Premier. Do I really have to make a special request to get the black debit card? (Definitely still showing as blue in the app and in Apple Pay).
I suspect some things may not update straight away as it won’t let me apply for a Rainy Day Saver yet and there’s no Rewards or Cashback showing either…
They don’t reissue cards unless and until you ask. “Special request” is a rather grandiose term for shooting a message on the in-app chat.
Tap ‘Products’ → ‘Premier Banking’ → ‘Explore all Premier benefits’
You should see all the benefits there - they all need to be applied for/opted in to, including Cashback.
Thanks - I still get this message so looks like I have to wait for something to update on the back end:
And apparently I have to telephone them to request a card. How quaint:
When I had this account I called and they ran a credit check for some reason (something to do with allowances for the card being different and the risk being different).
The card is not automatic with the account. You have a regular card until you speak to them and the card is changed.
OK thanks. Not sure I want another hard search at the moment so might leave it.
When I upgraded from the normal account it took a day to update on the app and Apple Pay. I then received my card a week later. It was all automatic for me
13 days from application to being able to use the app. It feels like an eternity.
However, the app looks nice and simple. Was very easy (perhaps too easy) to join Barclays Avios Rewards. Managed to link both accounts, but wonder if it will have a problem sending Avios from Barclays to BA as Barclays has my full legal name (two surnames) and BA has a simplified version of my name (one surname). Time will tell.
Also curious how the bonus joining Avios will work. This is a joint account. Do I need to switch a joint account or a sole account will do?
Also. I keep getting this annoying message whenever going to the “Rewards” section though.
