So here is an oddity. I had a standard Barclays account about 8 months ago (for a switching bribe) and briefly upgraded it to Premier to see what would happen/if they would send me a fancy black card. I never met the Premier requirements and ended up switching it away after about a month.
I’ve just opened a Barclaycard and when I log into the app (either Barclaycard or Barclays) it has clearly found my old profile. I can see statements from when I had the bank account before. What’s even weirder is that I still seem to have some sort of Premier status:
Is this just an OMGLEGACY thing? Should I try reopening a current account and seeing what happens/which card they send me?!
I tried applying for a Barclays Bank account using the app and got this. On the electoral roll, opened many accounts with no issues.
I remember when I had current and credit accounts with Barclays a while ago there were issues with having multiple profiles, maybe it’s that.
Anyway I can’t be bothered visiting a branch, so will just leave it.
Their systems are a little odd.
I opened a Premier account last year, pay £12 per month, get the Avios each month and now have an upgrade voucher.
I was sent a letter saying as I didn’t meet the requirements I was being downgraded to a regular account but that they would allow me to see out the remainder of the year for the Avios collection as long as I paid £12 a month.
12 months have passed and I’m still being charged the £12 a month and still getting the Avios; my account still says Barclays Premier but my account is actually a regular one - I can even upgrade to Premier from within my Premier account.
I had a Barclays account for years, I switched to NatWest and like you, I get that message whenever I try to setup a new account.
I don’t mind going into the branch but now it’s appointment only and last time they said it was a month before I could get an appointment.
How many people are prepared to wait a month for an appointment to open an account. It’s like the dark ages.
Go to Barclays website, click on the account you want at bottom of page it’ll say apply in the app but there’s a button to apply online. Click that and it’ll ask you like are you over 18, student etc. answer that and then click that you are a NEW CUSTOMER. Don’t log in to anything. Apply and answer the CRA questions at the end. It’ll either open the account or say there was an error opening your account online. If it’s the latter it’s sent to a manual team who usually push it through within 48 hours and it’ll be linked to your existing online banking
It’s been like that for weeks.
I have a feeling a new app may be on the horizon I just don’t know who I can ask to find out.
It’s also let me activate the MLS season pass even though I don’t have a current account any more. And there’s no option in the app to apply for a new account. Very odd:
You can only apply between certain hours for a current account
Think after 11pm it’s no go.
For most queries chat is unable to help and we need to call or visit a branch instead? Isn’t that just standard? ![]()

How long after opening the Premier did you receive the letter saying you didn’t meet the requirements? I was having a play around in the app to see how easy the upgrade process was, expecting it to say I didn’t meet the requirements and before I knew it, it has upgraded my account. I didn’t alter any information, so my salary was below the £75k but it still did it and I have received a welcome letter online ![]()
Yeah that’ll happen when they find your profile. Hopefully will be opened coming week. Then just wait for card and pin to re-set up app!

I never did get the Premier card so I don’t know.
I’ve just looked at my statements. Account opened in April 2023, it was Premier Barclays statements until May 2024 when it changed to Barclays statements.
However I have had a £12 fee every month, 1,500 Avios each month since April 2023 (to at least May 2025) and in April 2024 and April 2025 I got a BA Upgrade Voucher.
I’m basically going to leave it until they stop giving me Avios. I don’t use the account at all.
