The one feature holding me back from transferring my salary and bills is an automatic sweep (or top-up) facility that would transfer funds from a pot into my current account when my balance drops below a set threshold (or when a large DD is a about to go out). Ideally this would allow me to maintain a target balance on that account.
Metro Bank offer this today. My current bank pays interest on the current account which removes the need.
Having to do this manually sucks, especially if you have highly variable direct debits that may not even fit into the overdraft.
Parameters: Trigger balance for sweep, balance to maintain, savings pot to use.

One of the things I liked about Starling was that the spaces are still part of your balance, so if you were £250 overdrawn but had £500 in a space, technically you were not overdrawn.
I think most banks these days do a good job of telling you if payments due out that day will take you overdrawn.
I get your point however but I can also see why from Monzo pod they prefer it this way as they don’t as you say pay interest on your account (including the non savings pots)

Starling’s solution sounds like a useful alternative, if all pots were fair game.
You’re right the notifications are there, it’s just about making the next step automated rather than manual.
It’s like the days before auto-topup on PAYG phones
we’ll notify you but you have to be around and take some actions to fix it.
