Announcing Our £22m Investment Round and Crowdfunding!

Thom - you mentioned you were changing banks. Do you mean away from Monzo?

And your opinion is valid and does matter. Things have got a little heated in here. Easy when emotions are running high - and in some ways, it’s a good thing that so many people feel so passionately about Monzo.

I was moving my current bricks and mortar bank; I shall now transfer the Monzo cash into my new bricks and mortar bank upon the switch completing.

That’s a great shame. Is that purely based on the fact you weren’t successful in the crowdfunding round?

No, not at all. Mostly from the venom from users here. I’ve always wanted to be kind and helpful here and up until now I have, but as soon as I voice a concern the guys who all are current investors in the forum jump on me.

I’m a current investor and I haven’t jumped on you. What is obvious though is that this thread has significantly derailed.

I think potentially, it was your delivery that riled people, not your legitimate concerns - some of your points are valid.

I do apologise, I probably did go a little too much on the offensive and not all of it was valid.

There are two issues here:

  • The ability for people to invest more than they originally pledged. Monzo have already said this is a limitation of Crowdcube. It still strikes me as something which could easily be stopped in future investment rounds without too much additional work. I suspect the vast majority of people have not done that, it would be interesting to see some stats on this once the fundraising is complete though:

eg.
Amount pledged from those invited to invest x
Investment in excess of that originally pledged x
Investment below that originally pledged x
Total - Actual amount invested

  • The ability for people for potentially pre-register with multiple emails on Crowdcube. Arguably it’s difficult to prevent this without disenfranchising potential new investors with overburdensome pre-investment checks. It’s not an easy issue to resolve.

Out of interest, is anyone here investing solely to be first in line for a current account? It’s certainly the main reason I’m hoping I get a chance tomorrow.

Re issue one: I agree that pledged amount should be max you can invest. It would be sensible though to allow people to invest less than they pledged, or allow them to not invest anything. But if this was known from the beginning, wouldn’t it mean that all users simply pledge max and then decide later what they will invest? Therefore, whole concept of initial pledging period would be meaningless?

Re issue two: I was under assumption that only Monzo users were able to invest. Original blog post haven’t said anything about ‘other sources’ of pledging for potential investment.
I’m assuming that it was not possible to exclude any Crowdcube investors from being able to invest.
But I believe this is where ball was dropped in transparency department. Monzo didn’t lie, but wasn’t as transparent as I would hope it to be.
But then, if this was known, then multiple accounts on Crowdcube thing could have been exploited much more, wouldn’t it? Unless there are some rules in place (Monzo is quiet on this front so far) to avoid unfair chances by multiple account creation. Limiting post-investment (that name+postcode can only invest once or similar) is meaningless if someone has much higher chance to be picked in the first place.

@thom_horne I completely understand yours and many other peoples’ frustrations. We’re in daily contact with Crowdcube and working hard to addresses the concerns which have arisen over the last week or so in relation to the ballot.

Limiting the amount invested to the amount pledged is something we’ve pushed for since last year’s crowdfunding round. It’s not something Crowdcube have the technical ability to implement at this time unfortunately. From the beginning, we have encouraged people to invest what they pledged to keep things fair, but I agree that we need to discuss some more concrete alternative solutions with Crowdcube to cap investments. We’re investigating these issues currently and will take the appropriate action.

There are a ton of learnings to be taken from this crowdfunding raise. There are still many lucky investors out there still to receive their e-mail. With this in mind, it’s important to show you our continued efforts to keep things as fair as possible, which is all we have aimed for up to now. This will show in how we proceed with the above, and how we apply these takeaways to future crowdfunding raises too :slightly_smiling_face:

“It’s not something Crowdcube have the technical ability to implement at this time unfortunately.”

Maybe you guys should get in there fix it and charge them :joy:

Yep. Me.
I consider any investment as an account opening fee. Although I wonder if anyone who just made a pledge will also get to access to the first current accounts.

I would hope that everyone who pledged but wasn’t given the chance to actually invest should be up the front of the queue to get current accounts around the same time as actual investors. Even if there card doesnt have Investor on it, it would be nice if Monzo did something special for them (Potential title like Supporter?). At the very least, it might go someway to repairing the relationship with those customers who missed out.

Separate to this; very aware some forum members will pick this apart but here goes;
I think this whole situation in general is bad and will do more damage than the good it hoped to do. You will have Investors now who are glued and become brand advocates HOWEVER there is going to be a even bigger share of users who are annoyed at this situation. Most people I know who pledged but didn’t get in yet are just praying for that email, but seems its 84% already its highly unlikely; however any customers that read the forums or hear from other members about the whole situation with other entry points (re signing up directly without being a Monzo user), multiple accounts to increase chances or people changing pledges knowing what they were doing but still doing it; seem to be generally pissed at the whole situation and feel they missed out for a brand with all due respect - many of them are helping to build. Monzo didnt get all these users themselves; it was word of mouth of those Alpha testers followed by the beta. Those ones helping to build a brand and selling it to there friends are the ones missing out.

Its a ballot, we get it. There will be winners and losers; but at the very least it should be fair. Monzo’s keypoint is transparency, honestly and being a good citizen in the world. While I love they are being open about this; I just dont think it will convert to happy customers in the end. More will be unhappy than happy. There is no loyalty to honest people who missed out due to the actions of others. I would hope @anon91821566 and others go on damage control once this has finished and try to stop those who are turned off at the Monzo brand from this from damaging the overall situation. Perhaps if theres another chance to Invest down the line (with the same share value), all those who pledged but didnt get a chance get FIRST shot for example and not entered into another ballot.

Anyways, just my two cents. I’m still on the fence about this situation personally; I was a passionate fan of the brand, signed up over 14 others and while I still believe in the brand and people - I do feel utterly let down by the handling with Crowdcube on this.

I wasn’t lucky enough to have my pledge accepted. I’m disappointed of course, but more so in the atmosphere that’s developed over the past few days in this thread.

Be good to move on…

Agreed; also I think an exit survey would be good to run, to hear what both winners and losers thought of the process. It might provide a different picture to the tied poll of 40 users.

There’s still 11% to go! Fingers crossed for you :v::slightly_smiling_face:

Maybe not using Crowdcube again? Sounds like a lot of the issues are coming from them. Again.

They [crowd cube] also treat android users as second class users  :smirk:
