Amex (American Express) Discussion

Glad it’s not just me :slightly_smiling_face:

I’d rather just use a card type that is accepted everywhere, personally.

I appreciate that some people consider the rewards to be worth the downsides though. I don’t.

Same here with Starbucks, but on the plus point because they were supposed to be able to, they gave me the food and drink free

Which card? One of my most used offers as well but don’t have it available since December

I’ve had the opposite experience with Amex acceptance, I do live in London, but I’d say now most small / independent merchants accept it through Zettle, Stripe, and SumUp etc, there are very few places that don’t. Can’t remember if the dentist does, but I think the last time I used Chase and the cash back worked fine.

Can confirm similar here, the place that hasn’t wanted to adopt is the local car garage.

0.3% on debit / credit cards via Visa/Mastercard
2% ish last time he looked at Amex so I can understand it’s a huge chuck of an hourly wage.

I tried buying some car tyres recently, and the guy genuinely got very angry for even daring to ask if he’d take Amex.

My wife’s business (in central London) sees consistently 20 to 25% of all card payments by Amex.

I tend to avoid businesses that don’t take Amex as much as I can. If the first time they say no I’ll look to see if I can take my patronage elsewhere.

Doesn’t really bother me to be fair. The only reason I’d maybe go elsewhere is if I was wanting to maximise points with the card and it’s a big purchase.

We don’t accept it at work but rarely get asked and the fee charges by our payment company (alongside the fee they charge per transaction which differs for an Amex over a Visa/Mastercard) means we’d lose out.

Not hugely but we’d lost out more so it makes sense for us. Our competition which is nearby also doesn’t accept it, and they are a huge national company

It’s on my BAPP, but not my Platinum.

I’ve got the LNER offer on my Platinum. Although I was hoping for an Avanti one as I’m trying to book through them to earn Club Avanti status.

Meanwhile I’m here with both, and 10% back at the EE store.

This was a purchase at Costa :joy:. Was confused at first.

£22 at Costa? Did you buy for everyone in the queue :joy:

I would say that’s about right for 2 large drinks and 2 food items, surely?

Perhaps you are used to Greggs prices?

At least Amex is accepted in Costa, that’s useful.

Just got my 40k bonus points. Managed to do the 3k spend in less than a month due to purchasing a holiday on the card.

Can see me now putting it in a drawer as a backup until the renewal then cancel it. Wouldn’t mind cancelling just now as it’s a pain in the arse where it’s accepted or not as it’s been about 60/40 with me. However the 13k limit must be good for the ol’ made up credit score.

Keep it until you can enjoy the airport lounge with its mixed school dinners/MS Teams meetings/#LadsLadsLads vibe

I find if you travel off peak they’re generally bearable in the UK, and quite excellent in most of the EU that isn’t your typical UK stag/hen do or beach holiday destination.
