Amex (American Express) Discussion

The hotels continue, with one I’ve not ever had before:

Just came here to say that. Annoyingly it’s not on the Amex I use for travel but it’s still pretty good.

Yeah I’m not sure how much I’ll use it either.

Project Oval (the contactless expansion) is one stop away from me, but I’m also glad we don’t have it yet. Looking at fares from that station, my commute would be 25% more expensive. We’d also lose our Evening Out and Sunday Out tickets and Travelcards that are significantly cheaper than the TfL off peak fare.

Still, for the odd bus and tube journey I do when I’m in town, I’ll take the saving!

I actually have this available this year! (I’ll use the heck out of it. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: )

Not on any of my cards. That’s annoying.

Yep, that was me last year. I get very few offers I’d actually use and not getting it was really annoying.

I know that the offer is 20% cashback up to a maximum of £7 in total but I can read it to mean 20% cashback each time to a maximum of £7 each time and the more I read it the more I am convinced that I could argue that’s the case.

Unless it actually is 20% cashback every time up to £7 every time in which case I’m shocked that’s an offer.

Reads to me like it’s £7 total. For £7 to be the cap per transaction at 20%, the transaction would need to be £35 minimum. Would have to be quite heavy usage to spend £35 a day?

Oh I know, but then you could top up using contactless? I don’t know how that shows.

Does anyone get this offer on an Amex Cashback card ? (I don’t)

This is a nice addition from Amex

Assuming that this is a pilot because I’m not seeing the option in my app.

I got an email about it then went into the app to check and it was there as an option under my balance.

Perhaps a phased roll out.

Living in Jersey I never got the opportunity to get a American Express as they didn’t allow Jersey Residents to get cards.

But now living on the mainland the opportunity is now open for me.

Can someone please explain the like appeal of American Express to me?

Yes - I’ve had a look on their website and it says that only a small group of customers have been invited to try it out.

Points! And what do points mean? Occasionally valuable arbitrage for frequent flyer miles, allowing you to fly in premium airline cabins for far less than the cash value.

Some cards also have a decent insurance package and hefty cashback deals, though the annual fees can be pretty steep.

Head for Points is a decent starting point for reviews of their range - there’s usually decent sign-up bonuses to be had.

Protection and customer service.

Problem with a retailer or something you ordered? Amex will give you the money back and take it up with the retailer. They don’t mess around.

and points of course.

Isn’t this the definition of section 75 protection? Or are you just saying Amex do it a lot better than the rest of the lot?

In my experience you really notice the difference when you actually need to make a claim. Amex tend to refund you first and sort it out with the retailer later.
