Account unlocked w/face scan

I just had to have my face scanned to transfer an account from one phone to another.

It didn’t sit comfortably with me.

I want to know what that data was measured against, where that went and where it now resides.

You changed devices and they completed an ID check to confirm it was you.

It’s used against your ID you provided and compared to the video you made when opening the account as a second measure if it needed referring.

As for the holding of the information, it’ll be stored, likely for up to 6 years or as required under data controls.

ChatGPT:

If you completed a video selfie to verify your identity when logging in on a new device, Monzo is likely to retain that video as part of your identity verification records.

Monzo states that:

  • Your video selfie is stored on your account so it can be used for future identity verification (for example, if you need to verify yourself again after forgetting your PIN).
  • Identity verification data, including a copy of your ID and a short video of yourself, forms part of the personal information they hold about you.
  • They generally keep most personal data for as long as you have a Monzo account, and for 6 years after your account is closed to comply with legal and regulatory obligations. In some cases, such as anti-money laundering or fraud investigations, they may retain data for longer if required by law or legitimate interest.

So, if you’re simply changing to a new phone and recording another verification video:

  • Yes, Monzo is likely to keep that video.
  • Typically, it will be retained while your account is open and then for around 6 years after closure, unless there’s a legal reason to keep it longer.

This help doc covers the video: Monzo Help - Why we ask for a video when you open a Monzo account. You can also refer to their privacy notice for general info on what Monzo does with your data Customer Privacy Notice

Monzo does now just take a photo of your face when logging in on a new device Vs the old selfie video where you read out the numbers.

That face scan is now on display in the Monzo office.

On a dartboard.

I clean forgot that I made a video of myself to open my account, in fact I can’t remember doing that.

But if it is standard procedure, then I suppose I must have.

Many thanks for all the information !

I have no recollection of this.

There is no date on the documentation, is there any way to find out when this practice was instigated, or has it always been thus ?

Thanks for the reference.
